About this spot

This Soto Zen temple, standing in the castle town of Daishoji, is widely known for the 500 Rakan statues enshrined in the Rakan Hall behind the main hall. The sight of these stone statues, each with a different expression, is truly impressive, and searching for one that resembles a family member's face is one of the joys of a visit. The temple is also known as a place Matsuo Basho stopped at during his journey along the Narrow Road to the Deep North, and a haiku monument remains on the grounds. It's a highlight of a Daishoji stroll, offering both history and quiet at once.

Tips

About 10 minutes on foot from Ezu Shrine. Admission is around 300 yen for adults. Since the Rakan Hall requires removing your shoes to enter, shoes that are easy to slip on and off are recommended. It's about a 5-minute walk to the next stop along the Daishoji River.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes needed. The soft afternoon light filtering into the Rakan Hall makes for an especially evocative time
