About this spot

This memorial hall tells the history of Kiryu, a town that flourished in the textile industry to the extent of being called Nishijin in the West, Kiryu in the East. It makes use of the former Kiryu Textile Industry Cooperative building, built in the early Showa era, and its retro exterior is one of the highlights. Inside, displays of traditional high-warp looms dating back to the Edo period, along with vividly colored obi sashes and kimono, let visitors experience the delicate art of weaving up close. It's also a great place to learn about the local industry, useful even as inspiration for a summer research project.

Tips

A short walk from Kiryu Tenmangu Shrine along Honmachi-dori. The hall is air-conditioned, making it a good place to cool off during the hot hours.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. Early afternoon tends to be relatively uncrowded, allowing for a relaxed visit
