Former castle residence of the Shimazu clan and the Reimeikan history and art center
About this spot
The former residence of the Shimazu clan, who ruled Satsuma Domain throughout the Edo period. Though no keep survives, the original stone walls and water moat still convey the castle's historical character. The adjoining Reimeikan displays a wide array of materials on Satsuma history and culture, as well as artifacts from the Satsuma Rebellion, allowing visitors to understand how Kagoshima came to be. This location nicely complements the panoramic views seen from Shiroyama Observatory.

2026年の鹿児島縣護国神社六月灯は7月29日(水)・30日(木)の2日間開催されます。城山のふもと、草牟田の地に鎮座する護国神社の境内が、日が暮れるとともに数多くの灯籠で照らされ、幻想的な光景が広がります。六月灯は鹿児島県内各地の神社で夏に行われる伝統の夏祭りで、地域の人々が奉納した灯籠が参道や境内を彩ります。市街地からもアクセスしやすい立地で、家族連れでも訪れやすい六月灯として親しまれています。
Tips
境内周辺は当日参拝者で混み合うため、公共交通機関の利用が安心です。夜は足元が暗くなる箇所もあるので、小さな子ども連れは手をつないで歩きましょう。荒天時の開催可否は事前に確認しておくと安心です。
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from Shiroyama Park Observatory. Admission to Reimeikan is required. In summer, exploring the outdoor castle ruins can be tiring in the heat, so resting and cooling off inside the museum is recommended.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Following castle-ruins exploration with a museum visit flows smoothly.
