A statue of Takamori Saigō, one of the architects of the Meiji Restoration, depicted in striking military dress. Standing near Tsurumaru Castle Ruins along a main thoroughfare, it is an indispensable photograph stop on any Kagoshima tour. An information plaque in front provides a brief account of Saigō's life and his connection to Kagoshima.

2026年の鹿児島縣護国神社六月灯は7月29日(水)・30日(木)の2日間開催されます。城山のふもと、草牟田の地に鎮座する護国神社の境内が、日が暮れるとともに数多くの灯籠で照らされ、幻想的な光景が広がります。六月灯は鹿児島県内各地の神社で夏に行われる伝統の夏祭りで、地域の人々が奉納した灯籠が参道や境内を彩ります。市街地からもアクセスしやすい立地で、家族連れでも訪れやすい六月灯として親しまれています。

Tips

境内周辺は当日参拝者で混み合うため、公共交通機関の利用が安心です。夜は足元が暗くなる箇所もあるので、小さな子ども連れは手をつないで歩きましょう。荒天時の開催可否は事前に確認しておくと安心です。
