Museum of the Satsuma Students' Britain Expedition (薩摩藩英国留学生記念館)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A memorial museum telling the story of the ambition of 19 young Satsuma domain samurai who smuggled themselves to Britain in 1865, defying Japan's national isolation policy. You can view materials from when the students crossed the sea, as well as exhibits on how the knowledge they brought back was put to use in Japan's modernization. The story of these samurai, who ventured abroad at such a young age, is an educational episode for children too. The museum is air-conditioned, making it a nice place to learn some history while cooling off during the hot summer hours.
