Tokushige Shrine

Flow of the course

About this spot

This is a shrine connected to Shimazu Tadayoshi (Nisshin-ko), who laid the foundation for the Shimazu clan of Satsuma during the Sengoku period. The shrine sits in Isaku, the area where Tadayoshi was born and raised, and has been deeply revered by local residents throughout the years. The verdant shrine grounds offer a quiet, peaceful atmosphere, making it an ideal place for families to pay their respects before the evening's Isaku Taiko Dance. Throughout the shrine grounds, you can sense the deep connection between this region and the Shimazu clan through the historical remnants scattered about.

Tips

Some areas of the shrine grounds are not paved, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. In summer, the tree shade is pleasant, and the grounds are ideal for a rest break during your visit. The parking lot has limited spaces, so arrive early during busy times.

Best time to visit

Approximately 50 minutes. Early afternoon is the easiest time to visit before the midday heat subsides.
