The lawn plaza of Keihanna Commemorative Park is a spacious grassy area stepped like terraced rice fields, free to use as you please. About 300 cherry trees are planted here, so in summer you can choose a shady spot to spread your picnic sheet, which is a real blessing. There is no large dining area in the park, so bringing a packed lunch and eating on the grass is the way to spend lunchtime here. The steps give each spot a sense of being marked off, so you can settle in without being too close to your neighbours. Playground equipment for children is nearby too, so you can move your body lightly after resting and then go into the water.

Tips

Buying your packed lunch and drinks near Hosono Station or Shin-Hosono Station before you head over is the sure approach. Rubbish must be taken home, so prepare plenty of bags. Some parts of the lawn have little to block the sun, so the trick is to secure a spot in the cherry-tree shade early. Avoid going into the water right after eating; waiting 20 to 30 minutes before changing is safer.

About 50 minutes. You can let the peak heat just after midday pass in the shade
