Fureai-no-Mori (Friendship Forest)

About this spot

In Fureai-no-Mori at Taiyogaoka a lawn plaza spreads along the 330 m watercourse. It is surrounded by trees, so you can choose a shady spot to lay out your picnic sheet and secure somewhere to sit even in midsummer. There is no large dining district in the park, so bringing a packed lunch and eating on the grass is the way to spend lunchtime here. With the stream right in front of you, mealtime also becomes a chance to discuss where to start playing in the afternoon. If you rest in the shade after eating rather than forcing yourself to move, you can enjoy an afternoon of walking the wide grounds right to the end.

Tips

Buying your packed lunch and drinks near JR Uji Station or Keihan Uji Station before you head over is the sure approach. Rubbish must be taken home, so prepare plenty of bags. The grounds are wide, so checking the route from the car park or entrance to the lawn plaza in advance makes carrying your things easier. Avoid going into the water right after eating; waiting 20 to 30 minutes before changing is safer.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. You can let the start of the strong afternoon sun pass in the shade
