Site of Shiga Naoya's Residence (志賀直哉邸跡)

About this spot

This is the site of the home where the novelist Shiga Naoya lived in Abiko, with his study reconstructed in one corner of the garden. It stands on a bluff looking down over Lake Tega (手賀沼), and the view of the water glimpsed between the trees seems to preserve the stillness of that time. The building is small and the visit is over in no time, but knowing that the figure they saw at the Shirakaba Literary Museum (白樺文学館) actually lived here changes how children take it in. There are steep slopes and steps, so a baby carrier is easier to manage here than a stroller. Do not linger; take in the view of the lake and then head for lunch.

Venue: 柏市・北柏ふるさと公園

柏市の北柏ふるさと公園にある、無料の水遊び場「北柏ふるさと公園じゃぶじゃぶ池」です。2026年は7月17日(金)から8月31日(月)まで、9時から16時まで開放されます。8月1日(土)から3日(月)、8月17日(月)から18日(火)は休止になるので、お盆前後に出かける場合はとくに日付の確認が欠かせません。足をつけて遊ぶ施設のため、泳いだり顔を水につけたりすることはできず、60cmを超える大型の浮き輪も使えません。手賀沼の西端に広がる開けた公園で、芝生と水辺の景色が気持ちよく、家族でのんびり過ごすのに向いています。雨天や前日の豪雨で中止になることがあるため、前日からの天気も見ておきましょう。

Tips

大型浮き輪は使えないので、持っていくなら水鉄砲やバケツなど足元で遊べる道具が向いています。開けた場所で日陰が限られるため、帽子とラッシュガードで日差し対策をしてください。16時で終了なので、15時台には着替えを始めるとあわてずに済みます。水遊びのあとは体が冷えるので、乾いたタオルと着替えを多めに用意しましょう。

Tips

As an open-air historic site, the footing becomes slippery on rainy days. There is plenty of shade but also mosquitoes, so insect repellent makes it more comfortable. The surrounding streets are narrow residential lanes, so it is best to park according to the signs around the Shirakaba Literary Museum (白樺文学館) and walk from there.
