This is an old private house remaining in Horie, Urayasu, and it can be visited together with the adjacent Former Udagawa Residence (旧宇田川家住宅). Details such as the earthen floor, the beams and the low ceilings convey the proportions of daily life at the time. Unlike a museum's recreated display, this is a building that actually lived through that era, and the difference in the air held by its wood and walls is what makes it interesting. It is small in scale, so you can look around quickly in a short time. Along the street beside the Sakaigawa River (境川), old buildings like these remain here and there, so even a short walk lets you trace the town's memory.
Tips
Open days and hours can be limited, so check Urayasu City's information before you head over. There are points where you step up into the building, so shoes that are easy to slip on and off make it easier. The surroundings are residential with narrow streets, so getting around on foot or by bicycle suits best. Some streets have little shade, so do not forget a hat.
Best time to visit
About 35 minutes. The morning, with plenty of tree shade, is the easiest time to walk
