This municipal library in central Hita City has a well-stocked children's book section. Time spent choosing a favorite picture book in the air-conditioned interior gives a change of pace from the hot outdoors and helps children settle down. The local-materials shelves include books on the history and nature of Hita, which can spark interest in the background of the Mikuma River (三隈川) and the park you are about to visit. Once you have finished reading, have a drink of water and set off for the afternoon water play. Building the day so you do not use up too much energy in the morning is the trick to enjoying it right to the end.

日田市若宮町の竹田公園にある「竹田公園せせらぎ水路」は、小さな子どもが遊べる浅瀬の水路です。延長約110メートル・幅員2〜25メートルとゆったりした造りで、流れをたどって歩いたり、広くなった場所で座り込んだりと、子どもが自分のペースで水に親しめます。開放期間は令和8年(2026年)7月1日から8月31日までで、利用は無料です。水から上がれば、すべり台3つの複合遊具やサポート付きブランコといったインクルーシブ遊具が待っていて、いろいろな子どもが一緒に遊べるよう配慮されています。三隈川に面した三日月状の公園なので、川風が抜けて日陰は思いのほか涼しく感じられます。遊具広場・多目的広場のほか相撲場やテニスコート3面、50メートルプールも備わった、地元の家族が通う夏の定番です。

Tips

清掃日(7月10日・17日・23日・30日、8月6日・12日・20日・27日)は水路を利用できないため、日程を決める前に必ず確認してください。日陰の場所は限られるので、ワンタッチテントやタープがあると快適に過ごせます。水路の底は滑りやすい場所があるため、かかとの留まる水遊び用サンダルを履かせてください。三隈川に面しているので、川べりへ出るときは必ず大人が付き添いましょう。

Tips

Opening days and hours vary by day, so checking in advance is the surest approach. The library is a place to be quiet, so when you are with a small child, please stick mainly to the children's corner. Eating and drinking are allowed only in designated areas, so follow the rules on bringing drinks inside.
