Taima-dera Temple (當麻寺)

About this spot

This is an ancient temple dating back to the Nara period, spread out at the foot of Mt. Nijo (二上山). The greatest highlights are the East Pagoda and the West Pagoda; this is said to be the only place in Japan where both three-storied pagodas from the time of founding still remain. The grounds are spacious, and simply walking between the halls the shade of the trees keeps things cool, which is a great help even on a midsummer morning. The story of the Taima Mandala, said to have been woven by Princess Chujo, is also handed down here; telling it to children as an old tale sparks their interest. A calm townscape continues along the approach, and the next stop, the sumo museum, is within walking distance.

「二上山ふるさと公園水辺のテラス」は、葛城市の公式案内(2026年7月17日更新)で修繕完了が知らされ、2026年7月18日(土曜日)より再開した無料の水遊び場です。人工の浅い流れなので水深が深くなる場所がなく、小さな子でも保護者と一緒に安心して入れます。同じ公園には7,000平方メートルの芝生広場が広がり、わんぱく広場には木製のコンビネーション遊具、丸太の吊り橋、ネット、すべり台がそろっているので、水と遊具を行き来しながら一日中遊べます。ログハウス調のおもちゃ館もあり、日差しが強い時間帯や急な雨のときの逃げ場になります。公園のシンボルである456段の石段を登れば展望台があり、体力が残っていれば夕方の眺めを目指すのもよい締めくくりです。終了時期は未発表で、夏季のみ水遊び場になります。

Tips

プールではなく水底が滑りやすいので、マリンシューズなど足元を守る靴をかならず用意してください。利用時間は9:00から17:00までで、毎週火曜・水曜が休園日です(水曜が祝日の場合は開園)。休園日と重ならないよう曜日を確かめてから出かけましょう。終了時期は未発表のため、9月以降に訪れる場合は葛城市の公式案内で当日の状況を確認してください。456段の石段は水遊びのあとだと足に響くので、登るなら体力と時間に余裕があるときだけにしておくと安全です。

Tips

Some sections of the main hall and the sub-temples charge admission, so check the fees and visiting hours in advance. The grounds have gravel and stone steps, so there are situations where a baby carrier moves more easily than a stroller. In summer, choosing shaded routes around the temple halls makes the walk more comfortable. There are several parking areas nearby, and some may charge a fee.
