Sendai City Museum of History and Folklore (former Fourth Infantry Regiment Barracks)

Flow of the course

About this spot

Standing inside Tsutsujigaoka Park (榴岡公園), this museum conveys the daily life of ordinary people in Sendai. The building itself repurposes a former Imperial Army barracks built in the Meiji era, and the white clapboard exterior and high-ceilinged rooms are worth seeing in their own right. The displays center on farming tools, household implements and toys, so you can walk around comparing them with life today alongside your children. The compact scale means that even families with small children can complete a circuit while concentration lasts. You can stay cool indoors, which helps everyone save energy for the afternoon water play.

Tips

Check closed days, opening hours and admission fees in the official information in advance. The building is wooden and some floors creak, so it helps to tell children in advance not to run. Strollers may need to be left at the entrance, so a baby carrier makes it easier to move around. Since it is inside the park, you can go straight on to the afternoon plan after your visit.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. The morning, before the sun gets strong, is most comfortable
