About this spot

This is a restored farmhouse from the Wajū (輪中) region, located within the grounds of the Kiso Sansen Park Center. In this area, people lived within levee-enclosed communities called 'wajū,' building tall 'mizuya' (水屋) refuge houses on stone platforms to escape into when flooding occurred. Seeing the mizuya, positioned higher than the main house, and the small boat kept under the eaves, gives a clear sense of a life lived right alongside water. Visiting here after walking the levee of Senbon Matsubara between the two rivers in the morning connects the dots on why such extensive flood control works were necessary. You can freely explore both indoors and outdoors, so children can enjoy it like an adventure.

Tips

Viewing is free. The earthen and wooden floors have level changes, so hold small children's hands as you walk. The building offers shade, so it can also serve as a resting spot on a hot day. The water play area is just a short walk away within the park from here.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes. A good time slot for settling your stomach after lunch.
