Saidaiji Kannon-in Temple (西大寺観音院)

About this spot

This is an ancient Shingon Buddhist temple in Saidaiji, Higashi Ward, Okayama City. It is known nationwide for the Eyo Naked Man Festival held every February, but on ordinary days the precincts are surprisingly quiet, and you can take your time walking the large main hall and the broad stone paving. The buildings carry the weight of history, and standing in front of them is far more powerful than seeing them in photos, so much so that children naturally lower their voices. After a loop of the precincts, walk the street in front of the gate and you will sense the mood of a town that grew up alongside the temple. It offers calm time quite unlike a busy tourist site, making it just right for the start of the day.

岡山市中区にある「おまちアクアガーデン水の遊具広場」は、名水百選に選ばれた「雄町の冷水」を活かした約1,500㎡の親水公園です。水の遊具のほか、足で踏んで水を汲み上げる水車や、滝の流れに連動して動くシーソーなど、体を使って水を動かす仕掛けがそろっています。ただ水に入って涼むだけでなく、「自分の力で水が動く」体験ができるので、小学生くらいの子も夢中になれるのがこの公園の面白さ。湧水の水くみ場もあり、地元の人が名水を汲みに訪れる様子も見られます。利用は無料で、公園の開園時間は9:00〜18:00です。

Tips

2026年の水の遊具の稼働期間は未発表なので、出発前に岡山市の案内で確認してください。毎月第1・第3金曜と年末年始は休園なので、曜日の確認も忘れずに。湧水は冷たいので、小さな子は体が冷えすぎないよう、こまめに上がって休憩をはさみましょう。水くみ場を使う場合は空のボトルを持参し、地元の方の利用の妨げにならないよう譲り合ってください。着替えとタオル、濡れた服を入れるビニール袋は人数分そろえておくと帰りが楽です。

Tips

The precincts are a place of worship, so remind children in advance not to run around. On festival days the precincts and surrounding area get crowded and the parking lot may be unavailable, so check the schedule before you go. Follow the on-site information for which areas of the hall can be viewed and at what times. There is plenty of shade, but the glare off the stone paving is strong in midsummer, so a hat is reassuring.
