Tokaido Shinagawa-juku Honjin Site (東海道品川宿本陣跡)

About this spot

The route of Shinagawa-juku, the first post town counting out from Edo, still survives as a narrow shopping street. Running parallel one block inside the Daiichi Keihin (第一京浜), it is dotted with Japanese sweet shops, delicatessens and stores with old signboards. The road is narrow with little traffic, which makes it easy to walk with children. Information boards along the highway tell the history of the post town, and reading as you walk puts you in the mood of an Edo-era traveller. Kodomo no Mori Park is within walking distance.

子供の森公園水のモニュメント（シャワー水遊び）は、品川区の子供の森公園にある無料の水遊びスポットです。高さの違うカラフルな3本のパイプが立っていて、1日6回、各15分間シャワーが噴き出します。時間になると子どもたちが一斉に集まってくるので、噴き出す瞬間の歓声そのものがこの公園の夏の風物詩になっています。園内には恐竜の像が8体置かれていて、通称「かいじゅう公園」として地域に親しまれています。シャワーの待ち時間は恐竜像のまわりを探検したり遊具で遊んだりできるので、退屈しません。プールのように水につかる場所ではないため、水が苦手な子でも参加しやすいのが特徴です。

Tips

区の公式ページに稼働期間の明記はなく、7/1から9/30頃までというのは例年の運用にもとづく目安です。出発前に品川区の公式ページで稼働状況を確認してください。シャワーは1日6回・各15分なので、到着したらまず噴射の時間を現地の掲示で確かめましょう。シャワーを浴びると衣服はしっかりぬれるので、着替えとタオルは人数分用意してください。待ち時間は日差しを浴び続けることになるため、帽子と飲み物を忘れずに。

Tips

Closing days differ from shop to shop, so if you have somewhere particular in mind, checking in advance is the sure way. The street is narrow and bicycles pass through, so step to the side and stand still when you eat. Some shops take cash only, so having small change ready keeps things smooth. Take your rubbish home with you as a rule, and a bag for wrappers comes in handy.
