Rokugo Shrine has long gathered devotion as the guardian shrine of Rokugo, which thrived as a ferry crossing point on the Tama River. Large trees grow thick along the approach path, and the heat of the street eases once you step onto the grounds. Legends of Minamoto no Yoritomo and a stone taiko-bashi bridge are among several highlights here that you can tell your children about, making this shrine an interesting stop. The Tama River flows just to the south, and the location conveys how this town has always lived alongside the river. The visit itself is short, so it fits easily as a close to the morning.
Tips
The grounds are also a part of local daily life, so please visit quietly. There's plenty of shade, making it a relatively comfortable spot even in summer. It's more considerate to move to a park before spreading out a bento, rather than eating on the shrine grounds. It's reassuring to use the restroom beforehand.
Best time to visit
About 40 minutes. Under the trees feels cool even before noon.
