Tama City Ipponsugi Park Baseball Ground (多摩市立一本杉公園野球場)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This thatched-roof old farmhouse has been relocated and preserved within Ipponsugi Park (一本杉公園). You can see up close how the earthen floor, wooden-floored room, and hearth area were built, giving a concrete sense of how people once lived in the Tama hills. The high-ceilinged thatched house lets a breeze pass through even in summer, and it's fascinating to physically feel how people kept cool in an age without air conditioning. Since it's in the same park, it's an easy stop after lunch and makes for a good way to fill the time before the afternoon's water play. If you're with children, turning it into a quiz about what each tool was used for makes the visit more fun.

Tips

Check Tama City's official website for the days and hours it's open before you go. If you're able to go inside, you'll need to remove your shoes, so shoes that are easy to put on and take off are convenient. Since it's a cultural property, remind children not to touch the pillars or fittings. Please eat and drink only in the designated areas.

Best time to visit

About 50 minutes. You can spend the early part of the sun-drenched afternoon under the roof.
