Daijoji Temple (大乗寺)

Flow of the course

About this spot

Standing at the foot of Daijoji Hillside Park, this venerable Soto Zen temple is said to have been founded in the Kamakura period. Its stone-stepped approach is lined with tall cedar trees, keeping the air cool even in summer. The imposing main gate and the simple, orderly arrangement of temple buildings give off an atmosphere that even children can sense as 'a special place that has been here for a long time.' It's within walking distance of the hillside park, making it a perfect stop to close out a morning stroll. The shady temple grounds are also a good place to rest out of the sun.

Tips

Since this temple also serves as a training monastery, please visit quietly. Follow the on-site notices regarding which areas and times are open to visitors and the proper etiquette for viewing. The approach has a series of stone steps, so comfortable, easy-to-walk-in shoes are a good idea. It helps to remind children beforehand not to run around the temple grounds.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes. It stays cool beneath the trees even during the day
