Ogo Castle Ruins (大胡城跡)

Flow of the course

About this spot

These are the ruins of a medieval hirayama-style castle (a castle built on a hill) located in Kawarahama-cho, Maebashi City. It's said to have been the residence of the Ogo clan, vassals of the Kamakura Shogunate, and later Makino Yasushige became its lord. No buildings remain, but the impressive moats and earthworks, which make full use of the terrain on the southern foot of Mt. Akagi, are still clearly visible, and simply walking through lets you picture the shape of the castle. Since it isn't a paved tourist spot, climbing wooden steps and walking earthen slopes make it feel like a small expedition for children. Admission is free and you can look around at your leisure.

Tips

Not all of the paths are well-maintained walkways, so wear shoes you can walk in easily rather than sandals. In summer the grass grows tall and there are many insects, so insect repellent and long pants will give you peace of mind. Some areas have little shade, so don't forget a hat and something to drink. Keep your visit short and move on to the next stop before the sun gets high.

Best time to visit

About 45 minutes. Mornings, before the temperature rises, are recommended.
