Tanekura, Miyagawa-cho (宮川町種蔵)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This is a small settlement tucked in the mountains of Miyagawa-cho, Hida City. Stone-walled terraced rice fields, built up to level the steep slopes, together with wooden storehouses called itakura scattered among them, create a distinctive landscape. The itakura were built apart from the main houses to protect rice and important tools from fire, and they embody the wisdom of the people who have lived here. As you walk, you realize that every cultivated field and every stacked stone was shaped by human hands, and the sheer effort quietly astonishes you. This is a settlement where people still live today rather than a tourist site, so walking quietly is the basic rule.

Tips

This settlement is where local residents live. Please visit quietly, do not enter private property or interfere with farm work. Drive carefully as the roads are narrow. Parking is limited, so follow the posted guidance. There's little shade, so bring a hat and something to drink. It's reassuring to use a restroom before you arrive.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. The morning light casting shadows across the stone walls makes this a beautiful time to visit.
