This highland marsh spreads across the mountains of Miyagawa-cho, Hida City. It's known for its Asian skunk cabbage in spring, but in summer the star attraction is the sea of green and the cool breeze blowing across it. A boardwalk runs through the marsh, letting you walk right into the middle of the wetland without getting your feet wet. Because of the high elevation, the air is cool in a way that's hard to imagine on the plains, and the quiet is filled with birdsong instead of cicadas. For children, it's a curious experience, a place that's neither river nor pond, where water simply seeps into the ground. There's no cooler way to spend the morning while waiting for the pool to open.
Tips
The road to the marsh is a mountain road, so drive carefully. Please stay on the boardwalk and do not step off into the marsh. There are many insects, so insect repellent and long sleeves will make things more comfortable. There are no restrooms or shops, so prepare ahead of time. The weather can change quickly, so bringing rain gear is reassuring. A stay of about an hour is a good guideline.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. The air is clear in the morning, offering good views of the mountain ridges.
