Hottasaku Ruins (払田柵跡)

Flow of the course

About this spot

A national historic site spanning Misato Town and Daisen City, believed to be the ruins of a Heian-period government office. This is the site of a jōsaku (frontier fortification) built here at the time, and the sight of the reconstructed South Gate of the outer palisade standing alone in a wide field is far more striking in person than in photos. The fact that the imperial court built an administrative base here over 1,000 years ago to govern the Tohoku region comes through with a quiet power in the open, empty field. With nothing blocking the view across the vast, open site, children can run around freely, and the adjacent museum displays excavated artifacts. Take a moment to connect with this land's ancient history before heading to the pool.

Tips

About a 15-minute drive from Pool Park Misato. There's almost no shade, so a hat and something to drink are essential, and it's best to avoid lingering too long around midday. Check the museum's opening days and hours through the official information. The paths are grassy and dirt, so wear comfortable walking shoes. It's also a good idea to plan for lunchtime before heading to the pool.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. On clear mornings you can see all the way to the distant mountain ranges.
