Tako Stele Memorial Museum (多胡碑記念館)

Flow of the course

About this spot

This memorial museum is located in Yoshii-machi, Takasaki City, and the Tako Stele (多胡碑) is preserved in an adjoining shelter building. The Tako Stele is a stone monument erected about 1,300 years ago, and it's a valuable record of the establishment of Tako District in this area. Together with the Yamanoue Stele and the Kanaizawa Stele, it is known as the Three Steles of Kozuke (上野三碑) and is registered in the UNESCO Memory of the World. The museum offers accessible explanations of what the carved characters mean and what kind of place Gunma was at the time, and moving between the actual stele and the exhibits deepens your understanding. Even children should be struck by the surprise of seeing ancient history from a textbook exist as a real stone in front of them.

Tips

The museum is often closed on Mondays, so be mindful of which day you visit. Check the official information for admission fees and opening hours. The stele is inside the shelter building and can only be viewed through glass. The surrounding area is quiet, so you can view it in a calm setting. Having lunch on the move afterward makes good use of your time.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. You can learn thoroughly in the cool building before lunch.
