About this spot
An old temple of the Rinzai Enkakuji school, ranked fourth among Kamakura's five great Zen temples. The autumn foliage usually peaks from late November to early December. Maples line the worn Kamakura-stone approach, ginkgo trees stand in front of Donkaden Hall (曇華殿), which enshrines the main image, and the mountain at the back of the grounds is awash in the valley's autumn colors. With the bell tower gate, an old weeping higan cherry tree, and a Hotei statue in a small cave, the compact grounds are packed with highlights, making for an exploration-like visit with children.
