Yamate Park (山手公園)

Flow of the course

About this spot

Japan's first Western-style park, created in 1870 by foreign residents of Yokohama. Admission is free. Known as the birthplace of tennis in Japan, where the sport was first played in the country, its Tennis Origin Memorial Hall (テニス発祥記念館, 9:30-17:00, free entry) displays the evolution of tennis rackets. The pleasant grove of deodar cedars and lawns make it a perfect rest stop partway through a Yamate walk.

Tips

You can stop here on the way from Italian Garden to Berrick Hall. Resting on a shaded bench and restocking on drinks here will make the afternoon easier.
