About this spot
Right in front of Kita-Kamakura Station, nestled in a grove of majestic cedars, stands Engakuji (円覚寺), the second-ranked temple among Kamakura's Five Great Zen Temples. Built in the Kamakura period to honor those who fell in the Mongol invasions, its imposing gate is also known as the setting of Natsume Soseki's novel 'The Gate' (『門』). During the rainy season, the verdant approach deepens as rain washes the green foliage, and the temple grounds hold a serene, solemn atmosphere in the early morning. The white dragon painting on the ceiling of the main hall is also worth seeing.
Tips
It's best to bring cash for the admission fee. The grounds are spacious with elevation changes, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. If you venture to the inner temple halls, you'll find fewer crowds and a quieter atmosphere.

Allow 1 hour 15 minutes; the early morning right after opening is most peaceful
