Admire the iconic blue hydrangea approach and the circular 'Window of Enlightenment'

About this spot

Beloved as the 'Hydrangea Temple,' this Rinzai-school Zen temple showcases thousands of Hime hydrangeas lining the approach path each June. Their pristine blue hue is known as 'Meigetsuin Blue.' The circular 'Window of Enlightenment' in the main hall frames the garden view like a living painting. Charming details throughout the temple grounds—such as depictions of rabbits and squirrels—reward careful exploration at every turn.

Tips

During peak hydrangea season, expect long lines from opening time. Arriving before the gates open is essential. The stone steps are narrow; please be considerate of others. Parents with strollers should leave them near the entrance and explore freely.

Best time to visit

Allow 1 hour 15 minutes; arrival before opening is a must in June
