Tokiwa Park (常磐公園)

Flow of the course

About this spot

Asahikawa's oldest and most historic park, opened in the Taisho era and selected as one of "Japan's 100 Great Urban Parks." The park's centerpiece is Chidori-ga-ike Pond, and the pathways winding through green trees are perfect for leisurely strolls with a stroller. The Asahikawa Central Library and the Hokkaido Asahikawa Museum of Art are housed within the grounds, adding cultural charm. The nearby Ishikari River flows through, and walks with the river breeze bring back memories of the day—the zoo's cheers, ramen's steam, flowers in gardens. The park sits at the north end of Kaimono-koen Avenue extending from Asahikawa Station, making it convenient to pick up dinner in the downtown area on your way home.

Tips

About 10 minutes by car from the Science Museum, located in central Asahikawa with paid parking nearby. Admission is free and the park is open 24 hours. The pond has unfenced areas, so keep a close eye on small children. Even in summer, evenings are cool—bring a light layer. Asahikawa Station is about a 15-minute walk; you can stroll back through Kaimono-koen Avenue.

Best time to visit

Allow 15 minutes or more. Dusk is ideal for closing your day's memories—the pond reflects the sky's colors beautifully.
