"Japan's oldest park"—A leisurely three-generation stroll along the lakeside

This lakeside park was opened by Matsudaira Sadanobu, daimyo of Shirakawa, under the principle of "joy shared by all," creating a place where people of all social standings could enjoy themselves equally. It is designated as a National Historic Site and Scenic Area, and is known as "Japan's oldest park." The grand view across the lake toward the Nasu mountain range and the graceful landscapes of the "Seventeen Scenes of Nanko" selected by Sadanobu remain vibrant today. The promenade circling the lake has minimal elevation change, making it easy for grandparents to walk comfortably. Pine, cherry, and maple trees line the shoreline, their changing appearances with the seasons adding color to your stroll. Tea shops selling the local specialty, Nanko dumplings, are scattered around the lakeside, offering a welcome rest spot for weary walkers—a definite plus for three-generation outings. In the park opened to the common people by an Edo-period lord, family time unfolds peacefully.

Tips

About 10 minutes by car from central Shirakawa, with several free parking areas around the lake. Circling the lake is about 2 km; feel free to walk only the scenic sections that suit your party's energy level. There is little shade, so bring a hat and water. If you plan to enjoy the local specialty Nanko dumplings at lakeside tea shops, small coins come in handy.
