A grand shrine representative of Japan, enshrining Okuninushi-no-Mikoto (大国主大神), the deity of matchmaking and fortunate bonds. To visit, begin by passing through the great torii gate at Semizume (勢溜) and walking down the descent lined with pine trees, then purify yourself at the Purification Shrine before proceeding to the Hall of Worship. Izumo Taisha observes the ritual of two bows, four claps, and one bow, and the inner sanctuary is designated a National Treasure, said to embody the Taisha architectural style (大社造), Japan's oldest shrine building tradition. Walking slowly around the entire grounds reveals abundant points of interest, from the Soga Shrine (素鵞社) behind the inner sanctuary to the Music Hall (神楽殿), where you can stand beneath one of Japan's mightiest sacred ropes. The term 'fortunate bonds' here encompasses not only romantic connections but also bonds with people and work, allowing everyone to project their own wishes onto their visit.

Tips

Free parking is available on the west side of the grounds and near Semizume. Officially, it is recommended to enter from the great torii gate at Semizume and walk the descent. Learning the two bows, four claps, one bow ritual beforehand will help you visit with composure.

Best time to visit

Plan for about 90 minutes. Early morning hours keep the approach quiet, allowing you to pay respects in a refreshing atmosphere.
