Conclude Your Journey at the Grand Shrine of Ishizuchi Faith with Its Vermillion Grand Torii Gate
About this spot
The grand shrine of Ishizuchi faith, which reveres Ishizuchi Mountain as its sacred mountain, with the main shrine (Kuchinomiya) situated on a hill overlooking Saijo city. The vermillion-painted grand torii gate standing along National Route 11 is spectacular and has been cherished as a landmark of Saijo. As you climb the stone steps of the approach, pass through the gate displaying tengu masks, and the stately shrine building appears. From the high ground of the shrine grounds, you can see the Saijo town below and the Seto Inland Sea spreading beyond—this complementary visitation to the peak shrine viewed from the summit this morning concludes the journey. A shrine worthy of concluding your Ishizuchi pilgrimage, where you can pay respects to the mountain's deity without climbing to the summit.
Tips
Stone steps continue to the shrine, so keep on your comfortable walking shoes. Parking is available near the shrine and is free. Sacred stamps are available at the stamp distribution office. In the late afternoon, there may be backlighting at times, so photographing the grand torii gate from the approach side captures it best.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. Late afternoon light beautifully illuminates the vermillion grand torii gate, and the view of the Seto Inland Sea from the shrine grounds is especially lovely.
