Spring Water Pond Walk and Sturgeon Aquarium at a Top 100 Pure Waters Site
About this spot
The spring water at Denozan, which seeps up after years of filtering through the Kirishima mountain system, has been selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Pure Waters and is a source of pride for Kobayashi City. This continuously flowing water fills a pristine pond that mirrors the surrounding greenery. A walking path along the waterside is perfect for an evening stroll in peaceful tranquility. The Denozan Freshwater Fish Aquarium within the park showcases the freshwater fish raised in this pure water, and the sight of sturgeon—which Kobayashi City is working to farm—swimming gracefully through the tank is a must-see. The park is also known as a firefly-viewing spot on early summer evenings, where you can feel the exceptional water quality of this land. Conclude your day exploring highlands and flower fields with a quiet walk along the pristine spring water.
Tips
Though modest in scale, the aquarium offers close observation of fish raised in spring water. Note that the aquarium closes relatively early, so plan to arrive with time to spare. The ground near the pond can be damp in places, so wear sturdy walking shoes.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. An evening stroll when the setting sun sparkles across the water surface is most pleasant.
