Kyushu's largest caldera lake nestled north of Kirishima-take (開聞岳) in the southern Satsuma Peninsula. The lakeside view with Kirishima-take reflected in the clear waters ranks among the finest sights on this course, and a simple stroll opens the heart. This is also the lake famous nationwide for sightings of the legendary creature "Isshie," and the humorous Isshie statue on the lakeside is a popular spot for commemorative photos. The lake is also known for its giant eels exceeding one meter in length. Seasonal flowers line the lakeside, and the sight of the lake and Kirishima-take framed by blossoms is a view that demands a camera. It's a perfect spot for a refreshing break during your drive.
Tips
The lakeside has few shaded areas, so a hat is recommended. Shops and dining establishments are concentrated in one section of the lakeside. Windless conditions transform the lake into a mirror, increasing your chances of seeing the inverted reflection of Kirishima-take. Since Karasenbori gets crowded around lunch time, leaving by noon is a smart routing choice.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 40 minutes. Morning hours with calm winds offer the best opportunity to see Kirishima-take reflected inverted on the water.
