About this spot

Kyushu's largest caldera lake, lying in the southern part of the Satsuma Peninsula, north of Mt. Kaimon (開聞岳). The lakeside view, with Mt. Kaimon mirrored on the clear water's surface, is one of the most beautiful sights on this course, and simply strolling along the shore is enough to ease the mind. The lake is also known nationwide for sightings of the legendary monster Issie, and the whimsical Issie statue by the lakeshore is a popular photo spot. The lake is also famous as the habitat of giant eels that grow to over 1 meter in length. Seasonal flowers are planted along the shore, and the combination of flowers, the lake, and Mt. Kaimon beyond makes it impossible to resist reaching for your camera. It's a spacious, scenic spot, perfect for a break during your drive.

Tips

There is little shade along the lakeshore, so a hat is reassuring. Shops and eateries are clustered in one area by the lake. The calmer the wind, the more mirror-like the lake's surface becomes, increasing your chances of seeing Mt. Kaimon reflected upside down. Since Tosenkyo tends to get crowded around lunchtime, it's a smart idea to wrap up here before noon.

Best time to visit

About 40 minutes. On calm mornings, the reflection of Mt. Kaimon upside-down on the lake is especially worth seeing
