Honma Family Former Main Residence

Flow of the course

About this spot

"Though we cannot match Honma-sama, we wish to become at least a feudal lord" - this is the former main residence of the Honma family, the greatest wealthy merchant of the Edo period. Built in 1768 (Meiwa 5), the main structure combines the architectural style of a samurai study hall with that of a merchant's house, and is designated as a national historic site. From every corner of the building, you can feel the abundance of Sakata's Shonai Plain and the high commercial power cultivated by water transportation on the Mogami River. The well-maintained Japanese garden is also a highlight, and you can enjoy the quiet time at the beginning of autumn while gazing at the garden. Located in the city center, access to the next spot is also convenient.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from Yamaoikura, or about 15 minutes on foot. Admission fee is approximately 900 yen for adults (please check official website for confirmation). Since you remove your shoes indoors for viewing, wearing shoes that are easy to slip on and off is more comfortable. As traffic congestion in the city center is likely after evening on the day of the fireworks festival, it's wise to enjoy the city center during this time slot.

Best time to visit

Duration: approximately 1 hour. It's recommended to appreciate the garden slowly in the calm light of the afternoon.
