Mining Railroad to the Tourist Tunnel, Gold Panning Experience and Lunch
About this spot
A mining tourism theme park developed at the former mining headquarters of the Besshi Copper Mine, which supported Japan's modernization for approximately 280 years. Board a charming trolley train on the mining railroad, cross the red iron bridge spanning the gorge, and arrive at the tourist tunnel. Inside the tunnel, the mining practices of old are recreated through figures and models, with hands-on exhibits where you can learn about the copper mine's operations while playing. The indoor gold panning experience is a popular program that can be enjoyed even on rainy days, and the moment you spot a glimmering particle of gold in the sand captivates adults as well. The brick-built former hydroelectric power station standing in the grounds also speaks to the mine's former prosperity today.
Tips
Free parking available. It's best to have lunch at the main building's restaurant first, then proceed in order through the mining railroad, tourist tunnel, and gold panning experience for smooth flow. Even in summer, the tunnel is cool, so bringing a light layer is recommended. Wear clothing with rollable sleeves for gold panning.
Best time to visit
Plan for about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Around noon with lunch included is most leisurely, and the tunnel and gold panning are unaffected by weather.
