About this spot

A vast park covering approximately 49 hectares, developed around Hirosaki Castle (弘前城), the residence of the Tsugaru clan. The castle tower built in the Edo period still stands today, and it is the only existing castle tower in the Tōhoku region. Numerous castle gates and turrets, including Ōtemom Gate, survive and are designated as National Important Cultural Properties. The three-tiered moat and earthworks retain the original castle layout well, and a leisurely walk through the greenery along the moat allows you to feel the history of the castle town in your very bones. When you ascend to the main castle ground, a grand view awaits with Tsugaru Fuji—Mt. Iwaki (岩木山)—beyond the tower, perfect for three-generation family commemorative photos. The park has many benches and rest areas with mostly flat paths, so you can stroll at your own pace even with grandparents without strain.

Tips

From Tsugaru Clan Neputa Village, head through Kikkoemon Gate directly into the park. The park itself is free to enter, but the main castle grounds and northern fortification (北の郭) are paid areas requiring admission tickets (a combination ticket with Hirosaki Castle Botanical Garden (弘前城植物園) and Fujita Memorial Garden is economical). The park is very large, so take breaks and choose a route that suits your pace. After your stroll, there are many dining spots around Ōtemom Gate, convenient for lunch.

Best time to visit

Takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. A morning stroll when there are fewer people and the light is beautiful is recommended.
