About this spot

A scenic spot included in the Ashizuri-Uwakaikoku National Park where rock formations, created when sandstone deposited in ancient times was eroded by waves and wind, line the coastline. Starting with massive rocks like the horizontally-laid "Otaketake," the landscape continues with strange formations that defy belief—from rocky surfaces pocked like honeycomb to striped patterns like shibori dyeing. Walking the promenade feels like strolling through a natural sculpture museum. The surrounding sea is known as one of Japan's first designated submarine parks, and looking into rocky crevices reveals small tidal creatures. The contrast between the blue sea and white rocks is also photogenic.

Tips

You can walk directly from Ashizuri Marine Museum SATOUMI via the promenade. The rocky areas are slippery in places, so sneakers are recommended. During high tides, the walkable range narrows, so avoid getting too close to the water's edge.

Best time to visit

Approximately 50 minutes required. In the morning, light conditions are ideal, and the striped rock formations and sea blue appear most vivid.
