Gaze Upon the Daimyo's Renowned Garden from the Sukiya-Style Mansion Jutting Over the Pond
About this spot
A strolling landscape garden created as a villa for the Matsudaira family, lords of Fukui Domain, and designated as a National Scenic Site. Centered around a large pond, the sukiya-style mansion juts right to the water's edge, with views from the sitting room resembling a living painting. This renowned garden consistently ranks among the top Japanese gardens internationally. A leisurely walk around the pond reveals the garden's changing beauty at each vantage point.
Tips
Approximately 15 minutes on foot from Yōroppa-ken Main Branch. Since shoes are removed inside the mansion, wearing slip-ons is recommended for comfort. A combination ticket with the adjacent Fukui Municipal Hometown History Museum (福井市立郷土歴史博物館) offers better value.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. Afternoon light makes the pond gleam brilliantly when viewed from the sitting room.
