Shoka Sonjuku—Where Yoshida Shoin Educated Youth and the Origins of the Meiji Restoration

About this spot

This is the private academy presided over by Yoshida Shoin, where many young men who would play crucial roles in the Meiji Restoration, including Takasugi Shinsaku and Ito Hirobumi, were educated. The modest eight-tatami-mat classroom still remains and is a component of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site "Meiji Japan's Industrial Revolution Heritage." The adjacent Shoin Shrine grounds are spacious and include a museum introducing Shoin's life. Though it requires a short trip from the castle town, it's an essential destination where you can truly sense how much influence Hagi had on modern Japan's formation.

2026年の萩夏まつりは8月1日から3日までの3日間、指月山を望む白砂の浜辺・菊ヶ浜と、田町商店街・吉田町通り一帯を舞台に開催されます。海に面した開放的な会場は、萩城下町の落ち着いた雰囲気とはひと味違う、夏らしい賑やかさに包まれます。まつりの最終日にあたる8月3日には、田町商店街・吉田町通りに約60店の屋台が並び、18時から22時まで多くの人でにぎわいます。今回のコースで訪ねる初日(8月1日)は、まつりが幕を開けたばかりの高揚感を味わえる日で、浜辺に集う浴衣姿の家族連れの姿に、萩の夏らしい風情が漂います。

Tips

会場周辺は夕方以降、駐車場が混み合いやすくなります。砂浜を歩く場合はサンダルより歩きやすい靴がおすすめです。海辺は夜になると風が涼しくなるので、薄手の羽織ものがあると安心です。

Tips

It's about 10 minutes by car from the Hagi castle town. While you cannot enter the classroom, you can observe it closely from outside. The shrine grounds have shade, making it a good place to rest during summer.
