About this spot

A corner of old townhouses standing side by side near the boarding point for the Nagara River cormorant-fishing sightseeing boats. The street of lattice doors and white plaster walls has little traffic and a calm atmosphere where you can walk hand in hand with children. Along with shops selling local goods such as round fans and Japanese paper, there are restaurants, cafes, and confectioners scattered about, so you can handle lunch and buying snacks in one go. Walking to the far end of the street takes only about 10 minutes, so on a hot day it is also fine to walk just one block and then rest. It is a short walk along the Nagara River from the Ukai Museum.

Tips

The street is narrow and also serves local residents, so watch carefully for cars. Closing days and business hours differ by shop, so check in advance if lunch is your goal. Keeping lunch light is recommended to get ready for the afternoon water play. Putting the sweets you buy in a cooler bag is a safe move.
