A direct-farm market attached to Aki Station (安芸駅) on the Gomen-Nahari Line, lined with fresh-picked vegetables and fruit from local farmers, processed goods, bento boxes, and prepared dishes. Aki City is an area known for greenhouse farming, especially famous nationwide as an eggplant-producing region, and the market is also well stocked with treasures from both sea and mountain, such as citrus fruits and chirimen-jako (dried baby sardines). Buying a bento or sushi made with local ingredients, or the signature chirimen-don (dried baby sardine rice bowl), for lunch is a classic part of this train journey. It's also perfect for finding souvenirs. There's a rental bicycle counter as well, making it a convenient base for your afternoon walk around Aki. It's a lively market inside the station where you can catch a glimpse of local life.
Tips
Around lunchtime, popular bento boxes tend to sell out first, so it's recommended to secure your lunch as soon as you arrive. For heading toward the Nora Clock (野良時計), using a rental bicycle from the market's counter makes getting around much easier.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. There's still a selection even in the early afternoon, but it's safer to grab the signature bento boxes and chirimen-don early.
