Stretching about 1.3 kilometres, this is one of the longest shopping streets in Tokyo (東京). Delicatessens, butchers, Japanese confectioners and household-goods shops line the way, and it is busy on weekdays and weekends alike. Many items such as fried foods and skewers can be eaten on the spot, and sharing a little of everything as a family is part of the pleasure. Some sections are arcaded, which is welcome on days when the sun is strong. Ebara Minami Park (荏原南公園) is within walking distance.
Tips
Closing days differ from shop to shop, so check in advance if you have something specific in mind. Bicycles also use the street, so step to the side and stand still while eating. Some shops take cash only, so having small change makes things smooth. Rubbish must be taken home as a rule, and a bag for used skewers and wrappers is handy.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 25 minutes. Lunchtime gets crowded, so walking a little earlier or later gives you time to choose
