Onaka Site Park (大中遺跡公園) is a place where the remains of a late Yayoi-period settlement have been preserved as-is and turned into a park. Reconstructed pit dwellings stand scattered across the lawn, and since you can walk freely among them, you get to experience standing in a landscape you may have only seen in textbooks. Outside the Harima Town Local History Museum (播磨町郷土資料館) within the park, a preserved train car from the Beppu Railway (別府鉄道), which once ran through this town, stops train-loving kids in their tracks. Being able to walk around imagining what kind of houses the tools you saw at the museum were actually used in is what makes visiting both places together so worthwhile. It's a few minutes by car to Nozoe-kita Park.
Tips
Admission is free. The lawn area has little to block the sun, so be sure to carry a hat and something to drink as you walk. Follow the on-site signage regarding which parts of the reconstructed dwellings you can enter. It's a good idea to check the Local History Museum's opening days and hours with the town's information.
Best time to visit
About 45 minutes. In summer, it's a good idea to keep it short and head to lunch
