About this spot

A lush green park stretching out at the base of Maruyama, adjacent to Hokkaido Shrine. Deep within the park lies the Maruyama primeval forest, designated as a national natural monument, where shaded forest paths created by towering Japanese katsura and water oak trees make you forget you're in the city. You might encounter Ezo squirrels scampering up tree trunks, and searching for them while walking transforms a stroll into an adventure for children. Playgrounds and grassy areas allow families to take breaks at a child's pace. In spring, the park becomes crowded with cherry blossom viewers. Positioned between the shrine and zoo, the park itself becomes a pleasant forest-bathing connector on the journey.

Tips

About a 5-minute walk from Maruyama-koen Station on the Tozai Subway Line, and adjacent to Hokkaido Shrine. It's about a 10–15 minute walk to Sapporo Maruyama Zoo through the park. With abundant shade, it remains relatively cool even in summer; however, there are forest paths, so comfortable walking shoes are recommended. Restrooms and shelters are scattered throughout, so families with children can feel at ease.

Best time to visit

Takes about 45 minutes. A morning stroll when the dappled sunlight is pleasant is recommended.
