A facility representing Zao's dairy farming culture, producing and selling cheese in a corner of Togatta Onsen. Its signature product, Zao Cream Cheese, has long been beloved as a classic Miyagi souvenir for its smooth texture and milky richness, and the direct-sales Cheese Shed is lined with the bounty of Zao - sweets made with cream cheese, natural cheeses, jams, and more. The rich soft-serve ice cream, made from freshly squeezed raw milk, is an essential treat to finish off the drive. The grounds also have a restaurant where you can enjoy cheese dishes and a rose garden, so you can enjoy a stroll between rounds of shopping. Bringing along a cooler box lets you stock up on cheese without worry, a privilege unique to road trips.

About 5 minutes by car from the Togatta Onsen hot spring town, with free parking. If you plan to buy items requiring refrigeration, such as cheese, bring an insulated bag or an in-car cooler box. The shop's business hours can vary by season, so it's reassuring to check the closing time before deciding how to allocate time at the other spots. It's about 25-30 minutes by car to Murata IC or Shiroishi IC on the Tohoku Expressway.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 15 minutes. Late afternoon, right before heading home, is the most sensible time. The golden rule is to buy items requiring refrigeration last.
