Shinjuku Central Park (新宿中央公園)

Flow of the course

About this spot

Shinjuku Ward's largest ward-run park, adjoining the high-rise district of Nishi-Shinjuku. The park has a Water Plaza and a Kids' Plaza, with areas where you can touch the water and play equipment, so you can let children play before or after eating. There's also a wide artificial waterfall known as ‘Niagara Falls,’ and the sound of the water keeps the air around it cool. With a good balance of lawn and trees, you can spread a picnic sheet in the shade and enjoy a relaxed lunch. It's within walking distance of Honmachi Sakura Park.

Tips

It's easiest to pick up a boxed lunch around Shinjuku or Hatsudai Station before heading over. The ground around the Water Plaza can be wet, so remind children not to run. As a rule, take your trash home with you, so bring a bag. Avoid getting into the water right after eating; resting for 20 to 30 minutes before changing is a good idea.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour 30 minutes. Near the water, it feels cooler even at midday in midsummer
