Morioka Tezukuri Mura (盛岡手づくり村)

Flow of the course

About this spot

Standing beside Lake Gosho, this is a hands-on spot where you can see, make, and taste Morioka's traditional crafts and local industries. A variety of workshops line up side by side, covering Nanbu ironware, dyed textiles, bamboo crafts, Nanbu senbei rice crackers, and Morioka reimen cold noodles, letting you watch artisans' handiwork up close. Popular with families is the hands-on experience of grilling your own Nanbu senbei rice crackers. The fragrance of a freshly grilled cracker is something special, and makes for a great travel memory. On the grounds, a thatched-roof Nanbu magariya (an L-shaped farmhouse) has been relocated and restored, letting you get a sense of how people once lived alongside their horses under one roof in the old Nanbu region. Admission is free, and you pay for each activity individually, so it's easy to choose activities to match your children's ages and interests.

Tips

About a 20-minute drive from Makiba-en, located within the Morioka Regional Industry Promotion Center on the shore of Lake Gosho, with both admission and parking free. Hand-grilling rice crackers and similar activities can be enjoyed with same-day registration, but some experiences require advance reservation, so check beforehand. The gift shop carries a full lineup of Morioka souvenirs, including Nanbu ironware and rice crackers.

Best time to visit

About 1.5 hours. Registration for activities closes relatively early, so it's reassuring to arrive by early afternoon
