A roadside station along National Route 101 overlooking the Sea of Japan, affectionately known as Kasose Ika-yaki Mura (Squid Grill Village). The specialty here is, without question, its fragrant grilled squid. Lured in by the smell of soy sauce as it's grilled right in front of the shop, many drivers stop to take a look. Rows of sun-dried squid hanging in what's known as the Squid Curtain are a familiar sight of Fukaura, the kind of scene that makes you want to reach for your camera. The direct-sales shop is lined with fresh fish, dried seafood, and produce landed at local ports, and the restaurant also serves meals featuring the bounty of the sea. Taking a break while gazing out at the Sea of Japan spreading before you is the true pleasure of a coastal drive. A reliable stop on your west coast drive where you can take care of both lunch and souvenir shopping at once.
Tips
About a 30-minute drive north from Juniko along National Route 101. The restaurant can get crowded around lunchtime, so an early arrival is reassuring. Depending on the squid catch and the weather, grilled squid can sell out on some days. Having a cooler bag makes it easier to bring home fresh fish and dried seafood as souvenirs.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour. If you're aiming for freshly grilled squid, visit around midday
