Depart on the Hakone Mountain Railway, climbing steep grades with switchback turns
About this spot
The Hakone Mountain Railway climbs one of Japan's steepest grades from Hakone Yumoto Station to Gora Station. At the three switchback points along the way, the train reverses direction and the conductor and driver swap positions—thrilling moments for children. The windows frame deep green forests and gorges, with hydrangeas in bloom typically from mid-June to July.
Tips
For the best forward-facing views, arrive early to get a spot in the front car. Since you'll be transferring between multiple vehicles, purchasing a Hakone Free Pass at Hakone Yumoto Station eliminates the need to pay each time.
Best time to visit
Approximately 40 minutes travel; morning trains around 9 a.m. tend to be less crowded
